“Run,” she heard the towering evergreens shout, “run!”
Her legs carried her further and further into the somber forest. The only source of light came from the moon and the flashlights hunting her. She was offended; the sirens took an extra minute before alarming the whole forest that she had escaped. After all, she was a prized prisoner.
Wailing along with the vicinity’s sirens, the sound of the hunting vehicles and the shouts of the three teams of guards trailed behind her. ‘They’re fast,’ she thought, ‘but I’m faster.’ With impeccable agility, she zigzagged within the trees. Her best friends – the large opal in the midnight sky and the wooded giants guided her as they whispered into her ears. Out here in amongst the trees, that’s where she felt at home. Being so far from ‘home’ she didn’t know where she belonged anymore.
Feeling the change occur, she felt a simper crawl upon her lips, revealing her mouthful of razors. Soon, the hackles on her thick coated back rose high like mountains. Taking a quick rest at the creek three miles away from the facility, she glimpsed her reflection. The creature staring back at her was enormous, powerful, and determined. Faelan the Wolf, that’s what the other subjects and White Coats called her.
“Subject 138! Stand down.” The guards ordered, nearing the creek.
The heavily armed guards surrounded the creature. In the lab, she was controlled, they had the advantage; in the wild, she had the upper hand. As the enemies raised their weapons and took aim, there was a sudden rustle in the bushes. The guards spun, attempting to locate the source. It seemed to be encircling them. Keeping eye contact with the intended target, the captain could have sworn he saw the wolf smirking.
Screams of terror suddenly echoed throughout the forest. Taking a glance at the source of the yells, he was flabbergasted to see the goons hanging lifelessly from the branches of the evergreens and their guns abandoned on the forest floor. Nature was on Faelan’s side.
Neither the wolf nor the captain would divert their eyes from one another; her yellow eyes had his under a trance. As if he couldn’t control his own body, he was lured closer and closer toward the illuminated orbs. Bursting from beneath the forest floor, a root entangled itself around the captain’s ankles, causing him to land face first at her large paws. During the fall, his trembling hands lost hold of his gun and it skidded out of reach. Hesitantly, the captain lifted his head to come face to face with his nightmare. The creature snarled, exposing her merciless canines. Growling, her luminescent eyes glowed with an agonizing hunger that could only be satisfied by fully giving in to the wild animal they designed her to be.
